The Ultimate Guide to the Different Types of Hair Removal

Your body has around 5 million hair follicles that can lead to a full set of hair on your head. Instead, you witness it on your armpits, legs, and upper lip. If you aren't familiar with the different types of hair removal procedures, you will end up scaring off your date.

From sugaring to various waxing options, the opportunities are endless. If you want to remove unwanted hair and have smooth, shiny skin, we can help. Keep reading for tips on achieving the best results with sugaring and other hair reduction methods.

Sugaring

Sugaring combines sugar, lemon juice, and water to form a sugar paste. A licensed aesthetician will apply the paste to your skin and remove it without damaging the skin. This process makes it less painful and irritating than wax.

The ingredients are biodegradable, hypoallergenic, and organic. Since it covers a larger surface area, it tends to be quicker and more efficient than any other hair removal method. Your hair doesn’t need to be as long for sugaring. For this process to work, your hair only needs to be 1/16th of an inch long or 7-10 days of growth.

Ways to Wax

An aesthetician will apply warm wax to your skin. It gets removed once it adheres to the hair follicles and cools. For the wax to adhere correctly, you must have a few millimeters of hair growth above your skin.

You may also clip your hair before waxing. Long hair can cause discomfort during the rapid removal process. Waxing not only eliminates hair, but also destroys the cells required to grow new hair.

Shaving

Shaving removes hair by cutting it at the skin's surface. Since the hair is not removed at the root, it grows back within a few days. It can lead to ingrown hairs and razor burns.

Disposable shavers have two sets of blades that operate in both directions. This allows you to shave upward and downward without dragging or nicking the skin. You might also choose a razor with extra thin blades, a moisture ribbon, and a rotating head, so it glides gently over your skin.

Depilatory Lotion

These are topical treatments that you rub on your skin. Hair removal lotions use chemicals to destroy hair at the surface. The results only last a few days as the hair grows back.

Before applying the cream, do a patch test to check for allergic reactions to the ingredient. Keeping the cream on for too long can cause irritation, so remove it after a few minutes.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis uses a tiny needle that goes inside the hair follicle. It sends an electric current to burn the hair root. It's most effective on hair follicles that are actively developing.

Galvanic electrolysis uses an electric current to induce a chemical reaction. Thermolysis uses radio waves to release heat in the follicles. The goal is permanent hair removal, which can be used on all skin types and hair colors.

Epilating

Epilators are devices that combine motorized rows of tweezers to save time. It resembles electric shavers without the blades. The revolving cylinders have inbuilt tweezers that remove the hair root.

In contrast to waxing, epilators do not need excessive hair to grip onto, so you do not have to wait for new growth. Switch on the gadget and glide it over your skin while providing equal pressure. One session should last up to four weeks as you remove the hair root.

Plucking

Plucking or tweezing may be uncomfortable, but it's an excellent choice to remove a few hairs. It helps reshape your eyebrows or remove a few strands from your face. Avoid using this over huge areas; it might result in ingrown hairs and scars.

Threading

Some salons provide threading, a traditional Indian hair removal technique. A specialist will use twisted threads to pluck out undesired hair.

Laser

This technique often takes four or more treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. The laser beam or light pulse eliminates the hair bulb. The therapy may be costly and sometimes uncomfortable, but it can be applied to several body parts.

Medication

Spironolactone is a medication that delays or inhibits hair growth in undesirable locations. Vaniqa is a prescription lotion licensed by the FDA to inhibit facial hair development in women.

You apply it twice a day to the affected region. Your hair will grow back once you stop using the cream.

IPL

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) works by targeting the melanin in the hair as opposed to the skin. All light-based hair removal treatments are ineffective on light-blonde, white, grey, and red hair. This is due to the low melanin content of these hair colors.

IPL therapy is also unsuitable for women with dark skin since the light may react with the melanin in the skin rather than the hair. All you have to do is position the device in the desired location and let the lights do their job. It works by heating the hair root to slow down the regrowth process.

Why Is Sugaring More Beneficial?

Unlike wax, sugar is water soluble, which means it's an excellent exfoliator. This will leave your skin feeling soft and supple after treatment. With that in mind, here are some other benefits of sugaring:

Cooler Temperature

Unlike wax, sugar does not need high temperatures. This eliminates the chance of getting burnt, as is the case with wax.

Since heat pushes blood to the surface, it can lead to edema. Something you will be glad to avoid with sugaring.

Reduce Breakage

It's vital to apply the sugar mixture to the opposite direction of hair development. This puts less strain on the hair shaft, resulting in reduced breakage. Your skin will remain smooth for an extended period, thus giving your hair bulb a better chance to regrow.

Clean

Sugaring is far more hygienic than waxing. Your aesthetician will switch to a new glove each time they discard the sugar. That means there aren't any double-dipping, so no germs or possible infection.

Prevents Regrowth

Sugaring tears out the hair bulb, so the follicle collapses. Over time, your hair becomes weaker, and the follicle finally stops growing hair.

The longer you have been sugaring, the slower your hair growth will be. Combining this with laser hair removal treatments can make you hair-free in no time.

Which Types of Hair Removal Is Right for You?

It depends on your individual needs and preferences. Most people will agree that sugaring is the best. This method produces less pain and better results.

It's also more affordable than the other options, like waxing. If you ever need a spa day to explore the various types of hair removal methods, we can help. Check out our membership today, and let us take care of everything for you.
